Overview

Columbus is the capital city of Ohio, located in the Midwest region of the United States. Founded in 1812, the city has grown to a population of approximately 905,748 residents within a state of 11,799,448 people. As both the largest city and capital of Ohio, Columbus serves as the political, administrative, and economic center of the state.

The city is home to the Ohio Statehouse, a Greek Revival / Doric structure that has been a landmark since its completion in 1861. Designed by Henry Walter and others, the capitol building stands as a testament to the state's history and governance, attracting visitors from across the country and around the world.

Columbus has served as the capital of Ohio since 1816. Before Columbus, the state's capital was located in Chillicothe and Zanesville.

Ohio Statehouse

The Ohio Statehouse in Columbus is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, featuring a distinctive flat-topped cupola rather than a traditional dome. The building took 22 years to complete, from 1839 to 1861, and was designed through a collaboration of several architects. A comprehensive renovation in the 1990s restored the building and added a dramatic underground atrium connecting it to the Senate Building.
