Oklahoma City is the capital city of Oklahoma, located in the Southwest region of the United States. Founded in 1889, the city has grown to a population of approximately 681,054 residents within a state of 3,959,353 people. As both the largest city and capital of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City serves as the political, administrative, and economic center of the state.
The city is home to the Oklahoma State Capitol, a Neoclassical structure that has been a landmark since its completion in 1917. Designed by Solomon Andrew Layton and S. Wemyss Smith, the capitol building stands as a testament to the state's history and governance, attracting visitors from across the country and around the world.
Oklahoma City has served as the capital of Oklahoma since 1910. Before Oklahoma City, the state's capital was located in Guthrie.
Oklahoma State Capitol
The Oklahoma State Capitol in Oklahoma City is the only state capitol in the world with an active oil well beneath it, and it was the only U.S. state capitol without a dome until one was finally added in 2002. The Neoclassical building is constructed of Indiana limestone and pink and black granite. The dome addition, after 85 years without one, features a 17-foot bronze statue of 'The Guardian' -- a Native American warrior.
